Singing Lessons in Wood Green, North London
Looking for singing lessons in Wood Green? I’m Nicholas Martin, a professional vocal coach based here in N22. I’ve been teaching singers of all levels from my studio on Westbury Avenue for over two decades.
Whether you’re a complete beginner who’s never had a lesson, or an experienced performer preparing for West End auditions, I can help you develop your voice with personalised one-to-one coaching.
Why Learn to Sing in Wood Green?
You don’t need to travel into Central London for quality vocal training. My studio is a 10-minute walk from Wood Green tube station on the Piccadilly line, with easy access from Alexandra Palace, Turnpike Lane, Bounds Green and across Haringey.
Many of my students tell me they tried lessons in Central London first but found the commute exhausting after a full day of work. Singing requires energy. Arriving stressed and tired from an hour on the tube isn’t ideal preparation for a lesson.
Here in Wood Green, you can park easily, there’s no congestion charge to worry about, and you’ll arrive ready to focus on your voice rather than recovering from your journey.
What I Teach
I work with singers across all genres and experience levels. My training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama covered classical technique, but I’ve spent twenty years applying those foundations to every style of singing.
Musical Theatre
From Sondheim to contemporary shows, I’ll help you develop the vocal technique and acting skills needed for musical theatre performance. This is one of my specialities. Several of my students have gone on to perform in West End productions.
Classical and Opera
Proper bel canto technique, breath management, and stylistic authenticity for art song, oratorio, opera and early music. I trained as a classical tenor and still perform regularly.
Jazz
Learn to phrase, improvise and swing. We’ll work on the vocal freedom and flexibility that jazz demands, drawing on the traditions of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and the great jazz singers.
Pop, Rock and Contemporary
Build power, develop your mix, learn to belt safely. Whether you’re a gigging musician, recording artist, or just want to sound great singing your favourite songs, I’ll help you find your authentic contemporary voice.
About Your Teacher
I’m Nicholas Martin, a professional tenor and vocal coach originally from Gibraltar, now based in Wood Green.
I hold a Masters in Music Performance and completed my postgraduate training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Professor Brian Parsons. I’ve performed as a soloist across the UK and Europe, with broadcasts on television in the UK, Gibraltar and Spain.
But credentials only tell you so much. What matters more is that I genuinely love teaching. Watching someone discover what their voice can do never gets old, whether that’s a complete beginner hitting their first confident high note or an experienced singer finally cracking a technical problem they’ve struggled with for years.
I believe in honest, supportive teaching. I’ll tell you what’s working and what needs attention. No empty praise, but no harsh criticism either. Just clear guidance that helps you improve.
My Students’ Successes
Over the years, students from my Wood Green studio have gone on to:
West End and Professional Theatre
Siobhan Dillon finished third in BBC’s How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria and starred in Sunset Boulevard alongside Glenn Close. Scott Folan landed the lead role in Be More Chill in the West End. Zoe Gappy performed at the London Palladium in Sinatra: The Musical. Stevie Davies appeared in the Les Misérables film.
Drama School Acceptances
Students have been accepted to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Mountview Academy, Guildford School of Acting, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Purcell School for Young Musicians.
Personal Achievements
Many of my students aren’t pursuing professional careers. They come to me wanting to sing better for their own enjoyment, build confidence, or prepare for a specific event like a wedding or birthday performance. Their achievements matter just as much.
What My Students Say
“My daughter first went to Nicholas for a lesson at 15 years old. She was auditioning for music and musical theatre schools. From the moment she started, he helped elevate her voice to a new level. He even helped her film and record her video submission, which got her the place at the Purcell School for Young Musicians. Now 18, she has recently been awarded a place at Guildford School of Acting for Musical Theatre.”
“I have taken singing lessons for the past 18 years with various teachers. However, since about 4 years I am taught by Nicholas and finally during this time I truly transformed my voice and brought it to the next level. Nicholas feels the music and he truly gets what you need. Through selecting music to challenge me, words of encouragement or correcting my posture, I learned to understand my voice and it has given me so much confidence as a performer.”
“Nicholas is a wonderful teacher. I started as a real beginner about two years ago. I’m amazed by how high he made my voice go and that was just after the first lesson! Have always wanted to sing classical and now I can. He will change the way you sing for the better.”
“Receiving vocal training with Nicholas was the stepping stone to where I am now, Lead vocalist with the Royal Australian Navy Band in South Australia. If I had not started with Nicholas, my true passion would not have been untapped and my love for singing would still be lurking on the back burner of my life.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience to start lessons?
No. Many of my students are complete beginners who’ve never sung outside the shower. I’ll meet you where you are and build from there. Some of my most rewarding teaching has been with adults who always believed they “couldn’t sing.”
How often should I have lessons?
Weekly lessons produce the best results, especially when you’re starting out. Once you’ve established good technique and habits, some students move to fortnightly sessions. Less often than that makes it difficult to maintain momentum.
What should I bring to my first lesson?
Just yourself. If you have songs you’d like to work on, bring the sheet music or have them on your phone. But it’s fine to arrive with nothing. We’ll figure out where to start together.
Do you teach children?
I primarily work with adults and older teenagers (16+). For younger children, I’d recommend finding a specialist who focuses on that age group, as the approach is quite different.
Can I book a single lesson to try it out?
Absolutely. There’s no minimum commitment. Book one lesson and see how it feels. Most people know within the first session whether it’s working for them.
